Rothwell Castle

From the 11th Century until the 1970s, Rothwell was the home to Rothwell Castle, where three Kings visited and which was owned by John of Gaunt. The fortified manor house fell into disrepair many times and was eventually torn down in the 1970s.

Roman Settlement

In 1977, evidence of human activity in the 2nd-4th century was found on what is now Rothwell Country Park. Amongst the Roman-era finds were a human skull, a rare yew tree bucket, and a shoe specially made for someone with a foot injury.

Rothwell Civic Building

Once home to the Rothwell Urban District Council, the 19th-century Civic Building has been abandoned since 2016 and has recently been sold for £364,000. The building is currently subject to a planning application to turn it into 9 flats.
